We often think of February as the month of love. I agree whole hardheartedly. Yesterday was Valentines Day. It was a perfect bluebird sky day. The day just beckoned you to come outside and
The Al Johnson Telemark Race
The Al Johnson Telemark Race is just as fun to watch as it is to participate in. This race honors the 19th-century mailman, Al Johnson. Johnson, with his 11-foot wooden skis strapped to his leather boots, would traverse the mountains to deliver mail to remote mining camps dotted along our backcountry mountains of Crested Butte. He was the original O.G. mountain tough guy.
Racers skin up and then ski down the mountains all dressed in wacky customs. The event is a fundraiser and benefit for Crested Butte Avalanche Center. On March 18, 2018, will mark the Al Johnson Telemark Race’s 44th anniversary.
To this day the event has grown in support and participation. Last year, the race had record participation with well over 200 racers ranging in age from 10 to 74 braving the steep and rugged ski terrain. The course can change from year to year due to snowpack but it has never been canceled.
Things to Remember:
Only the first 120 people who have registered will get to receive the 2018 official Al Johnson headwear.
If you don’t have any gear, you may contact the Alpineer to get you equipped with boots, skis and skins for the race.
There will be a variety of lodges and suites that will provide discounts for your accommodation during that time.
Lift tickets and race bibs will be available at the ticket window on the day of the race which can amount to $55.
There are two races, both of which will begin at the North Face lift.
The first event will be the tag team race which will start at noon amounting to $40 per team who registered early and $50 to the teams that registered on the day of the race.
The second event will be the men’s & women’s Individual Uphill/Downhill Race which will starts at 1:00 pm amounting to $20 per individuals whom have registered early and $30 per individuals whom have registered on the day of the race.
