The Grand Traverse ski race is a truly unique experience, and what some racers dub as the OG (Original Gangster) of races. It starts at midnight and racers only have their flashlights to guide them through the course.

The race is absolutely breathtaking, especially under the night sky, where one can gaze upon the shining stars, and the brightest moon, but this race should be taken seriously. Being at night, one’s level of awareness and focus must be on point.

This is a two-team race and it is done this way to ensure safety and for both partners. The racers who have participated in this race have gone through much training and have vast experience with this level of intensity. Participants have gone through rigorous evaluations and key conditions need to be met. It is essential that the racers have a high level of physical fitness, experience in the back-country and related terrains, have the necessary equipment to survive, and they must possess mental stability and focus to finish the race.

For this year:

The Grand Traverse will be held March 29th. Many participants have come from all corners of the US just to immerse themselves in this backcountry experience. There are also many videos online that show avid skiers that want to try the race again.

2018 Winners:

The results of last year’s ski winners (last names only) are: The winners of the Co-ed teams, were team Larochelle, who have competed against 35 other racers, and completed the race in 7:14:56. Female team, Smith – Susla, won in the female category competed against 18 racers, in 8:06:52.2. Vanhorn-Smith competed against 124 racers and completed the male team race at 6:32:00.7. They too were the overall winners of the race.

If you want to learn more about the race, we have an article last year that talks about the 2018 Elk Mountain Grand Traverse
