Summertime In Crested Butte
Although the official first day of summer isn't until June 21st, everybody knows that this upcoming Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kick off to the summer season. For those of you who don't live here yet, but are obviously interested because you are reading my Crested Butte Blog - you may not know that Colorado is just as fun in the summer as it is in the winter. Here is the lowdown on summer fun in Crested Butte and Gunnison Valley.
Summer Lift Rides
Those same lifts that take you to the top of the Crested Butte Mountain for skiing in the Winter, work just as well in the summer. Only now, the Silver Queen or the Red Lady Express is your transportation to a picnic or a hiking experience. So gather the troops - friends or family, pack a basket of sandwiches and a blanket, lay back, enjoy the breathtaking views and get started on that summer tan.
Mountain Biking is a sport of endurance, balance, bike handling skills and self reliance. It can be a tame activity, but also very intense if you want it to be. The great thing about Crested Butte is that it has a whole network of trails - fit for beginners and extremists. With the perfect terrain for the sport, mountain biking is a popular past time of Crested Butte. Some time back in the 60's, the entertaining game of Disc Golf was invented. The basics of the game involves individual players throwing a flying disc into a basket or a target. Just like golf, the object is to go through an 18 hole course, landing the disc in the basket in the fewest number of throws of the disc. Crested Butte just happens to boast Colorado's most scenic Disc Golf course around. Ten-Three @ CB is so well known that it was even named one of the top 23 courses in America.
Golf is a sport that requires a lot of focus, patience and accuracy but it can also be a soothing way to relax and socialize with friends. Now who would have ever imagines playing golf in the mountainous valley. In reality, it is very popular and many gold enthusiast and people who love the mountains, travel to the club at Crested Butte and Dos Rios golf club in Gunnison to participate in this fun and tranquil activity. The clean, crisp air in the area is perfect for anyone’s health and the atmosphere is truly majestic. People can sometimes stay in these facilities for quite a number of hours without realizing it.
If you are an animal lover, have to worries. Crested Butte and the Gunnison Valley is known in Colorado for their wide assortment of wildlife ranging from the most common animals like deer, moose and beavers to the more exotic ones like the white-tailed ptarmiga, the dusky grouse and the lynx. There are many wildlife parks to go to and there are also a lot of tour groups to join to go bird watching and for spotting animals.
Wildlife tours are one of the most popular reasons why people travel here. Do note however that these amazing creatures are wild, so joining groups and having experts to join you on your trips are the best way to go as they would know where these animals can be spotted and so that everyone can be safe.
If you like nature but don't like physical activities than taking a scenic drive is something for you. The scenic drive is one of the most relaxing thing to do as a tourist. You can sit back and relax in the comfort of your car and witness the stunning views of the landscapes. This can be an ideal trip for those who would like to go road tripping, having picnics and for those who like taking photos.
Whether you are an outdoorsy person or someone who likes to stay indoors, there is always something fun to do in Crested Butte and the Gunnison Valley. Other activities in the valley include zip-line tours, stand-up paddle boarding, rafting, horseback riding and rock climbing.
