Mardi Gras In Crested Butte 2019
Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday refers to a festive Carnival celebration that starts on or after the Christian feasts of the Epiphany and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of Lent.
Some fun facts about this event is that Mardi Gras is always celebrated on a Tuesday, before Ash Wednesday. This event also marks the end of the Carnival Season, which starts after Christmas, on January 6th which is also known as ‘Twelfth Night’. In countries like Australia, Canada, England and New Zealand, people celebrate Mardi Gras by eating pancakes and have pancake themed activities, which is why Mardi Gras is also known as “Pancake Day”. Colors like purple, gold and green are the official colors as these colors signify justice, power and faith. Lastly, King’s cake is eaten throughout the Carnival Season. A colorful pastry with a trinket baby Jesus inside. It is said that whoever gets the cake with the baby Jesus inside gains good luck for the rest of the year.

This year, in Crested Butte, we are celebrating the event on March 5th with a parade kicking off from 4 through 5 pm. The Mardi Gras parade will be along 7th and Elk Avenue in downtown Crested Butte.
Mardi Gras is always a time of fun. Whether viewing the parade from the sidelines or participating in the actual parade, both of which are just as exciting. Participants will definitely have a place to see all the colorful and wacky floats that will pass along the streets. The event is free and the community encourages people to create their own wacky float. Wonderful prizes await those who will win the contest.
