Fat Bike World Championship

Image titleAre you looking for a way to exercise and have fun while doing it? Biking might be the solution for you. It's easy to learn, very enjoyable and can be a pain-free activity for anyone. Okay, well I can't guarantee it won't be completely pain-free.   

Biking has a lot of benefits, not only does it give you a healthier lifestyle and provides a good means of exercise, but it can also be a recreational outlet for many. In some areas of the world, people are looking at biking as an environmentally friendly means of transportation to counter the effects of pollution. Biking is also a sport that can bring families and friends together and can even be a means of building a closer-knit bond in a community.   

Here at Crested Butte, Colorado, we will be hosting the third annual Borealis Fat Bike World Championships, presented by Upslope Brewing Co. on January 25th to 28th of 2018.   

The event will have all sorts of activities. There will be a bike vendor showcase, which will feature all sorts of sellers and merchants that sells bikes, bike gears and some of the latest equipment. There will be demos on January 26, 2017, from 10 AM to 3 PM for everyone to experience the greatest and latest bikes on the market. Please note the vendors of this event will be at the North Village from 10 AM to 4 PM. There will be an available lift for bikers and their bikes to take them up and down the mountains. There will be numerous competitions for every category imaginable, whether you want to compete by yourself, in teams of two and four, compete in a gender-specific race, compete in an age-specific race and many more. Lastly, for those who just want to bike for recreational purposes, there are a lot of courses available to cater to you, your family and friends. This is indeed a weekend that any bike enthusiast will not want to miss.  

 January 24th, 2018 will be the Kick off party located at Brick Oven Pizzeria and Pub at 223 Elk Avenue, Crested Butte at 5:30 PM. You may get your free race packets, BIB and free beer there.   

On January 25th, 2018 at the North Village will be the start of the 20 miles, 2.5-mile loop and 8 laps races. Like all the other races, you can save the race track on the map apps from CBGTrails.com   

On January 26th, 2018 at the North Village will be the demo day and an afterparty will be held at 5:30 PM.   

On January 27th will be the races for the 5-Lap Championship, 30-34 miles, 6 miles loop and 3-Lap Fun Race Open:18-20 miles, 6 miles loop located at the East Side/Town Ranch.   

Lastly for January 28th will be the Downhill fat biking located at the Crested Butte Mountain Resort at 10 AM to 3 PM. There will also be an afterparty located at the Avalanche Bar and Grill at Mt. Crested Butte at 5:30 PM for some fun and relaxation for everyone as well as the announcing of awards.   

The categories of the races will be JR Boys ages from 10-16, JR Girls ages from 10-16, Open Men ages from 21-35, Open Men ages from 36-50, Open Men ages from 51 and above, Open Men ages under 21, Open Women ages from 21-35, Open Women ages from 36-50, Open Women ages 51 and above, Open Women ages under 21, Rec. Men ages 21-35, Rec. Men ages from 36-50, Rec. Men ages 51 and above, Rec. Men ages under 21, Rec. Rec. Women ages 21-35, Women ages from 36-50, Rec. Women ages 51 and above, Rec. Women ages under 21 and Tandem.  

If you are planning to compete in one of the races, a few rules must be enforced. 

* Bikers must wear a helmet. 

* Bikes must have a minimum tire size no less than 3.5″. 

* Bikes must have a maximum tire pressure of 10 psi.  

Important things to know: 

* Signing up early will guarantee you a spot in the greatest Fat Biking World Championship in the world. 

* All courses are subject to change until the start of the actual race. 

* All courses are weather dependent. The biking activities will be held in the rocky mountains with no guarantee of good weather and clear skies. For this reason, unfortunately, if the date of your event will have bad weather and the race will be cancelled, NO REFUNDS will be issued. 

* Thursday and Friday’s events will be held in the Town of Mt. Crested Butte at the North Village/Snodgrass meadow. 

* For the social events, there will be FREE commemorative race bib, beer, branded burgers not to mention a lot of prizes, giveaways and live music.
