Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremonies In Crested Butte
Christmas fever is no doubt in the air. It can start as early as the beginning of the "Ber" months and as early as the Thanksgiving holiday. For me, I love Christmas so I am one of those that starts playing Christmas music by Halloween! Nevertheless, Christmas is one of, if not the most popular holiday where family and friends get together and become merry.
It can also be a chance for people to participate in a community by attending different social events. You can join a charitable organization like feeding programs for the poor. You can bring your kids to meet a mall Santa who asks them what they want for Christmas. You can even join holiday festivities organized by the government, corporations, NGOs and the likes.
For most, the Christmas holiday is very attractive and it gets even more attractive when everything is decorated, especially with lights. Lights are used for symbols and signs to get your attention and when lights are being used to decorate something, like a Christmas tree, it can be sort of magical. Like music, it has a way that uplifts your sense of being, your spirit and overall mood. Seeing these beautiful lights with friends and family puts a smile on our faces and a sort of sparkle in our eyes.
Here in Crested Butte, Colorado, we have four major Christmas tree lighting events.
We have the Night of Lights celebration which is an annual lighting event that happens in Gunnison.
For this year, this free event will be on December 1st, Friday at 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm. This will be a time where the colossal Gunnison Christmas tree, at the end of Main Street, will be flipped on with the help of Santa Claus, who will be arriving. The town then goes all out, displaying lights several blocks in the historic downtown. Some businesses will also be serving treats and hosting bonfires along the way. Santa will then be available to have his photo taken with kids.
The next event will be The Crested Butte Light Up Night
The Crested Butte Light Up Night will be held on December 8, 2017, from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM at the Brick Oven Pizzeria and Pub, sponsored by Crested Butte/Mt. Crested Butte Chamber of Commerce.
The event will be a blast as Crested Butte will have all sorts of fun activities like carolling, eating holiday treats around town, getting your pictures taken with Santa while witnessing the lighting of the Christmas tree.
An activity that will be new this year is the "Scavenger Hunt" game which will allow the participants to find "Santa's reindeers" hidden around Elk Avenue. In order to participate in the event, you will need to fill in the scavenger hunt form by Saturday at 4 PM or bring the form to the Mt. CB's Light Up Night that very evening in order to join a lottery draw for some really cool Christmas prizes.
Another new thing this year will be the "Holiday Window Display Contest". You will have a chance to judge different businesses window displays around town by handing a Christmas ornament to a representative of that business/office. You may get the ornaments from the CB Visitors Center between 9 am and 5 pm on Friday or at the CB's Light Up Night. You will be given until the closing time on that Sunday to hand over your ornaments to the business with the best window display. The business with the most ornaments will win an awesome prize, their business will be featured in the newspaper as well as on the Chamber's Facebook page.
The next event will be Light Up Night On The Mountain.
This event will be on December 9, 2017, at 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Though the celebration isn't as large as the Gunnison lighting, it is still however always fun. This event will allow everyone to gather in the courtyard at the Lodge at Mountaineer Square to participate in singing Christmas carols. There will also be a tree lighting event so bringing your little ones is the best way to go. They will truly enjoy the event and get a chance to have their photo taken with Santa Clause himself and ask him what they want for Christmas.
This is also in line with the Santa Ski'n Crawl which is an event hosted by the Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) that wants to ask you to participate in breaking the world record for the largest number of skiing Santas. Come to CBMR at 2:00 PM this December 9, 2017, with your best Santa Clause get up and ski with numerous Santa Clauses.
Lastly, will be the Christmas Eve Torchlight Parade and Santa Sleigh Ride.
This event is held every year at the Crested Butte Mountain Resort. For this year, it will be on December 24, 2017, at 5:15 PM to 6:00 PM. The celebration is very fun and engaging as people will have a chance and watch Santa Clause, at the Butte 66 deck, come down the mountain in a sleigh pulled by a snowcat during the Parade. This is the time where children have an opportunity to get candy canes from Santa. He will be staying after the tree lighting to take photographs and sign autographs.
You can also stay to watch the Crested Butte Ski and Ride School perform their famous torchlight parade down the front side of the mountain at 5:30 pm.
