“Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh!” As the Christmas holiday is fast approaching, we get excited with what holiday activities we can do at home and with our loved ones. We want to purchase gifts for our families and friends, we anticipate decorating our home and Christmas trees, and we look forward to singing Christmas carols.

We also want to enjoy the holiday with our community, to have a sense and spirit of togetherness. Here in Crested Butte and in the surrounding towns, the magic of this season is stronger than ever. The community is set in a winter wonderland, blanketed with the whitest of snow, and is in a neighborhood with the most cheerful town folks. Kids can easily believe that this is the place is where Santa Clause lives.
This year, take your family to the Butte 66 deck on December 24. There will be hot cocoa at the bar, Christmas cookie decorating, and candlelit caroling with local musicians; and at 4:30 pm, you can watch as Santa comes down the mountain on a sleigh pulled by a snowcat. This is a perfect opportunity for your kids to join the crowd as Santa hands out candy canes to all the little boys and girls. The Butte 66 deck will be the best location to watch the show and get photos with Santa.
After this, on the same day, 6:30 pm through 7:30 pm, at the the Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) at the cloak of darkness, witness CBMR employees meander down the mountain with torches to light up the mountainside, creating a glowing streak that is quite the site. The spectacle is absolutely incredible and will have you and your loved ones clapping and cheering them on.
These free annual events are something not to be missed, a true spectacle, and a time for you and your family to join the community and have a jolly good time.
