We often think of February as the month of love. I agree whole hardheartedly. Yesterday was Valentines Day. It was a perfect bluebird sky day. The day just beckoned you to come outside and
The annual Fat Tuesday or the Mardi Gras festival, as we call it, is always such a fun celebration here in Crested Butte. Whether you are simply a spectator, and are enjoying the event at the sidelines of Elk Avenue, or actually participating by riding on one of the wacky floats in the parade, this is a free Crested Butte traditional event that everyone is invited to join.
My in-laws, who used to live in New Orleans back in the day, now living here in Crested Butte, have mentioned the amazing street parties of the city. People from all walks of life go out in the streets, and wear the most elaborate and colorful costumes, usually of green, purple and gold. While going around town, you can hear live jazz music everywhere and people from buildings and rooftops are throwing colorful beaded necklaces which you can catch by waving your hands, dancing, and flashing your colorful and festive costumes. Men and women are very much encouraged to wear the most wacky costumes they can think of to participate in the street party. The event is deeply ingrained in the community, so much so, that it is a legal holiday in Louisiana.
Here in Crested Butte, it is more or less the same, and is even a kid friendly event for the whole family to enjoy. This year, the celebration will be on Tuesday, February 25th, beginning at 4 pm and evening at 7 pm, hosted by Crested Butte/Mt. Crested Butte Chamber of Commerce. We can expect colorful floats, well organized parades, fantastic live music, street parties, give-aways, and even an after party. There are also special drinks at our local diners and restaurants. Elk Avenue Brewing and Django’s Restaurant, for example, have drinks that are themed with the whole event. You can also sit on one of the bar stools, and enjoy the parade from inside the place through their glass windows and hang-out with the friendly locals there.
This will be a special moment for the business this year. We have recently moved to 315 Sixth Street at the Four-Way Stop, so we can expect that the parade will come our way. This is the first time that our office will be engaged in a community event, and we are so excited to see all the commotion of the crowd having fun. We feel we will be “up close and personal” to this celebration at our new location.
So what are you waiting for? Bring your friends & family to join in the fun! Cheer from the sidelines, bring the whole band, or craft your own float! This is the perfect retreat to spend special days like Mardi Gras with the community, and we will welcome you with open arms. I am sure this will be a great experience that you will not want to miss.
