“Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh!” As the Christmas holiday is fast approaching, we get excited with what holiday activities we can do at home and with our loved ones. We
Biking is one of my favorite outdoor activities. If you live here or visit here, you know we love biking so much that we have many exciting events dedicated or opportunities to host events, including the Ride the Rockies, the Fat Bike World Championship, and the Crested Butte’s Pole Pedal Paddle Race, just to name a few.
I, personally, have tried a couple of biking events. Yes, there are times that it can be tiring, and quite challenging, but completing an event is so empowering and rewarding that it enriches my well being. At the end of the day, when I am exhausted from biking, I am overjoyed seeing the beautiful mountain scenery against the colorful sky. This is just an example of how wonderful life can be living in Crested Butte and the Gunnison Valley.
Talking about great biking events, the West Elk Bicycle Classic is coming up. This great event, going on its 6th successful year, is aimed to help deserving children from under prevailed homes to go into programs that can help better their future. This year, the event is aimed to fund-raise for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
This year, the West Elk Bicycle Classic will start at 7 am on September 1, reaching a span of 135 miles with a timed loop around the West Elks. It is said that the the route will be on the prettiest and quietest roads around town, but will be definitely be a challenging ride, with frequent steep hills and long sustained climbs as its terrain.
During the whole event, there will be lots of police escorts, food and drink stations, and medical units at standby, to aid those participating. There will also be cash prizes that await the top 3 men and women at different age groups, for best in time in completing the race. Regardless on whether one wins or not, those who join are all winners. Biking along a path with the most breathtaking scenery and mountain landscapes is just absolutely gold.
Those interested will have to pay a $120 fee to participate. If you want to participate in the event, click on “register” to have a place in the race.
